Enneagram and Consciousness

Having a designated name to identify each personality type is essential for communicating in the world. There are nine columns each with a number and enneagram name. In The Enneagram and Consciousness diagram, the Riso/Hudson names for the nine types are inserted in each column. The placement of the numbers to the columns is specific to that center and a permanent location of the number.

The conscious Mind concerns worldly change. Note how the paradigm complements the three centers. The subconscious body serves both the conscious and unconscious as a translator. There are two arrows next to number 9. One arrow points to the conscious Mind and the other to the unconscious Spirit. Nine is a key number in the Actions center that is half conscious and half unconscious. The Spirit concerns the soul and spiritual transformation. The unconscious deals with lessons, experiences, emotions, and is the hidden motivator behind our actions. The three statements below are an example of conscious, subconscious, and unconscious.

  • 5-6-7 - My conscious number communicates and defines any feeling from the body:

Example: hurt feelings if my opinion or suggestion is rejected or criticized. (Ego/Mental)

  • 8-9-1 - My subconscious number translates and tells me how my body is working:

Example: physical exhaustion or an overly anxious reaction to meeting a deadline. (Body/Sensations)

  • 2-3-4 - My unconscious number motivates the behavioral actions or reactions:

Example: reacting or behaving out of habit with little awareness. (Emotions/Soul)
